今天是科幻小說之父H. G. Wells的生日(21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946)，出生於中低階級的英國人Wells，父親原先打算讓他成為板球隊員(cricketer)，不過並未成功。之後在鍊金術師()底下當學徒，開始了他對科學的興趣。在他二十歲不到的年紀，就協助創立了Royal College of Science Association，也就是皇家科學院(Royal College of Science)其中一院的前身。另外他也在二十歲利用學校的科學周刊，就寫了第一本科幻小說The Time Machine(時光機器)，開啟了他在科幻小說上的地位。
